Black History Month is Ridiculous!

February 16, 2008 by babyboomerbev

Not my words—but rather the words of veteran actor Morgan Freeman.  In a 60 Minutes interview with Host Mike Wallace a few years ago, Freeman said, “You’re going to relegate my history to a month?  I don’t want a Black History Month. Black history is American history,” he said, noting that there are no white or Jewish history months.

No–they’re not my words but they are MY THOUGHTS.  I, too, don’t like the idea of celebrating a “Black History Month.”  As an African-American baby boomer who has a vivid recollection of the past, giving us a month to acknowledge our accomplishments sounds like another “separate but equal” tradition the South was notorious for.  There are too, too many African-Americans who have contributed greatly to this country whether some people want to acknowledge it or not.  It’s not our fault that they were left out of the “American” History Books.

And you know what?  I’ll be saying the same thing in March when we celebrate Women in History Month.

Can’t we just get on with the business of being a real “United We Stand—Divided We Fall” kind of nation?

My Baby Boomer Valentine

Honey, even though you’re getting older with signs of gray

I want you to know I love you more and more each day

My sexy handsome husband, you’re so worthy of my attention

‘Cause you still know how to crank up that old engine

Your love, your kisses are pure delight

And it’s a joy to snuggle up to you every night

Thank you for coping with my menopause day after day after day

And finally figuring out that sometimes it’s just best to get out of my way!

Yes, even today you still make me hotter than a hot flash and that’s no lie

My Baby Boomer Valentine, I’ll be yours until the day YOU die.

Boomer Women: Having Our Say

February 8, 2008 by babyboomerbev

It’s nice to have friends in high places.  I cherish all of my friends, especially the ones who see my vision and are doing what they can to help me.

In April, I am hosting the First Annual Baby Boomer Girlfriends Retreat in Daytona Beach, Florida. Issues affecting baby boomer women will be brought to the forefront during a TELEVISED meeting on April 18, 2008. The program is being called Boomer Women: Having Our Say.

The forum, which is being televised by PBS Station WCEU-TV15, will consist of a panel of nationally recognized female boomer advocates who will address topics such as health care and caring for aging parents, financial matters, entrepreneurship, reinventing yourself after 40, as well as the emotional and physical impact of growing older.

OK, so how am I able to pull off getting a TELEVISED baby boomer town hall meeting and draw in some big name boomer advocates? There are three reasons:

1) The Grace of God
2) Good friends in high places
3) Fellow baby boomers who believe in my project.

The weekend will be filled with lots of activities in addition to the town hall meeting. An Over 40 pa-jamming party is planned and celebrity baby boomer Bern Nadette Stanis, who played Thelma in the TV sitcom Good Times, will be a featured speaker.

The theme for the Retreat is “Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!” That theme is so appropriate because many women in my age group are meeting challenges head on and we’re not letting a little thing like menopause and growing older slow us down. And just like the song says, “we’re definitely on the move!”
